The Real Downsides of Using Comedy in Your Ads

Do funny ads have any real downsides?

Honestly, one. Better creative makes your ad account more stable and predictable, so you will never again feel the exhilarating jump scare of your CPMs shooting up for no reason. Costs stay put. Performance turns reliable. Your ads stop being an adventure. If you were getting your thrills from your ad account, you will have to get them elsewhere.

The "reasons not to buy us" framework

Before the honest bit, here is a comedy technique worth stealing, because it is the exact move this whole argument is built on.

List the "downsides" of your own product, played completely straight, where every downside is secretly a benefit. It is reverse psychology with a wink. "Warning: our software is so easy to use you will lose your favourite excuse for missing deadlines." "Downside: our mattress is so comfortable your in-laws will never leave." You are pre-empting scepticism by leaning into it, and the reader does the flattering maths themselves.

It works because a brand willing to rag on itself reads as confident, and confidence sells. Nobody lists their flaws unless they are relaxed about them. So watch what happens when we do it for our own case.

Downside one: no more jump scares

You will never again experience the pure adrenaline of your CPMs, CPCs and CPAs leaping up overnight for reasons nobody in the building can explain.

Boring, right? Better ads mean more stable campaigns. When your creative is earning attention instead of paying full price for it, the platform stops treating you like a stranger, and the numbers stop lurching about. No 7am cortisol spike over a dashboard gone red. No emergency meeting about a metric that fixed itself by lunchtime. Just costs that behave. If that was the highlight of your week, you have my sympathies.

Downside two: performance you can set your watch by

The worst part. Your ads start performing consistently, reliably, predictably.

Gone is the delicious uncertainty of not knowing whether this month's campaign is a triumph or a smoking crater. Entertaining creative sends warmer, higher-converting traffic to your page, again and again, in a way that is frankly a bit samey once you are used to it. Risky business, comedy. It takes a perfectly good rollercoaster of an ad account and turns it into a train that just keeps arriving on time. Where is the drama? Where is the story you tell at the pub about the week Meta tried to end you?

So what is the actual argument?

That every "downside" of funny ads is stability wearing a comedy nose.

The reason boring ads feel exciting is that they are unpredictable, and unpredictable is a nice word for fragile. A campaign that swings wildly is not thrilling, it is unmanaged. What you actually want is the boring version: lower costs, steadier performance, results you can plan a business around. The only genuine cost of switching is that you will have to find your excitement somewhere that is not a spreadsheet.
