How AI Slop Nearly Killed Our Conversion Rate

There was a stretch where the AI slop flooding the internet nearly took White Label Comedy down with it.

Here is the problem and the fix, plainly. The wave of lazy AI copy has trained buyers to bounce at the first hint a page is not worth their time, which quietly guts your conversion rate. The businesses that survive it are the ones whose copy is genuinely worth reading: entertaining, unmistakably human, and therefore worth the attention it asks for.

I want to show you exactly how bad it got for us, because the numbers are the argument.

A ChatGPT conversation ad where every answer to fixing failing ads, even the request for an AI solution, is high converting comedy ads

What the slop actually did to our numbers

Our sales page conversion rate fell from 4% to under 1%. The page had not changed. The offer had not changed. The traffic had not changed. What changed was the reader on the other end.

Our ads slid from a 3x ROAS to barely breaking even over the same period. And it was not only us. One of our biggest organic social clients went from making a sale every 25 to 30 clicks to needing 200 clicks to shift the same unit. That is not a dip. That is the floor falling out.

For a business whose whole job is making money for clients, this was existential. If we are not profitable for them, they are not clients for very long. So we went looking for what had actually broken.

Why the same page suddenly stopped working

It was not the page. It was that AI slop had retrained the audience.

When every inbox, feed and landing page is stuffed with lazy machine-written copy, people get fiercely protective of their time. They have been burned too often by pages that promised something and delivered word soup. So they have lowered their tolerance to zero. At the first whiff that a page is not worth reading, the tidy story arc, the evenly-sized paragraphs, the vague corporate warmth, they are gone.

And here is the mechanism that matters: if they do not consume your sales message, they cannot buy. Selling has always depended on people actually reading the thing. A page that gets bounced in two seconds never gets to make its case, no matter how good the offer buried inside it is.

So did we find a fix?

We did, and it is almost annoyingly simple. In a world drowning in slop, the copy that wins is the copy people genuinely want to read.

For us that means funny. Entertaining copy earns the one thing slop has made scarce: attention. When a page makes someone smile in the first few lines, they keep reading, and reading is the whole ballgame. It also does something slop can never do, which is prove a human made it. Nobody bounces off writing that is clearly alive.

That is the honest resolution. The slop flood did not kill sales copy. It killed lazy sales copy, and it handed a bigger advantage than ever to anyone whose writing is worth the reader's time. We rebuilt around exactly that, and the numbers came back.

Meet Brian

The obvious objection is that writing everything by hand, entertaining and human, every time, does not scale. That is the problem we spent months solving.

Brian is the world's only genuinely funny AI Marketer, and he is the opposite of slop. He researches your customer, maps the angles, writes the copy, punches it up with real jokes and builds the creative, following the same steps our comedy writers use, which is exactly why what comes out reads like a person wrote it.

Take Brian for a spin and put copy in front of your market that earns the attention it asks for, instead of being bounced with the rest of the slop.
