Progressive Insurance – WFH – What Day (2020)

Synopsis We’re already big fans of Progressive’s funny ads featuring Mara, Flo and their colleagues. The insurance company’s new series of spots is themed around working from home during the 2020 coronavirus lockdown, with the characters meeting via video call each episode. Review This latest instalment, ‘What Day’, is dubbed ‘the Improv Edition’. We love the characters, and the performers are strong improvisers, but we preferred the tighter (presumably scripted) thirty second spots in this

Progressive Insurance – Off the Mara-ket (2020)

Synopsis Mara and Flo are at a karaoke bar, wearing their branded aprons and badges (as you do). They keep getting hit on by guys, but Mara’s not having any of it — she shuts each one down by advertising her fictional unattractive traits: “I have a back rash”, “I laugh like this”, and crucially, “I love insurance”. Review This ad nails the basics of sketch comedy while making it abundantly clear what’s being sold.

GEICO – Lobster Hot Tub Party (2019)

GEICO prides itself on offering the best deals when it comes to car insurance premiums. In fact, once you know how great their deals are, “nothing will be able to excite you as much”. At least that’s their brand message – and one they’re hoping you’ll buy into. In this funny commercial, we see a married couple in a hot tub with a lobster. Synopsis How happy are customers who switch to Geico? Happier than a camel on Hump Day – apparently. Review Another one of those “funny” adverts that spawned a seemingly never-ending series. I’m not a huge fan of this one (it’s not particularly clever) but you can’t deny that it’s captured the nation’s attention.
