Ryan Reynolds, Hollywood star and new owner of Mint Mobile, presents a low-budget lockdown advert that’s packed with jokes, and delivered in his trademarked self-deprecating tone.
This is a solid addition to the pantheon of Reynolds-based funny advertising — packed with all the fourth-wall-breaking meta-humour you’d expect from the star of Deadpool.
In particular, the glimpse of Ryan’s computer desktop provides a bumper crop of background gags, which rewards repeat viewing and just begs you to hit pause. Our personal favourite is the RTF file in the bottom right corner labelled “Companies to Buy’. It’s precisely because Reynolds seemingly doesn’t have an ego that he can pull off these ‘egotistical rich guy’ jokes in abundance.
With the world in lockdown, it’s a tough time for brands and advertisers (okay, it’s a tough time for everyone) — but ads like this demonstrate the multitude of options that embracing comedy can open up. Can you imagine a similarly low budget ad produced during lockdown working anywhere near as well if it weren’t funny? Try doing a serious advert with a webcam and a Powerpoint presentation — we dare you.
In the meantime, we’re going to sit back and rewatch this fresh funny from Ryan Reynolds and Mint Mobile.
