TV Producer Turned Viral Content Creator

Hi, I’m Adam Hunt.

I used to be a TV Producer – in charge of some of the UK’s biggest shows on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4. (An amazing job, even if I did occasionally find myself in a room with James C*rden…)

But now I help brands and businesses make viral content for social media.

It’s officially Britain’s most-watched TV chat show.

But from a content creation perspective, it’s one of the most challenging shows I have ever worked on.

So, faced with these channel-swappingly dull subjects, I needed a way to stop the One Show from haemorrhaging viewers.

*That is to say, the minority of comedy writers who are hilarious AND keep acceptable levels of personal hygiene…

And Holy Guacamole! Those joke-writing ninjas saved the One Show from ratings suicide! (At least they did on days when I was in the Producer’s chair).

From then on…

I made it my mission to transform every hum-drum One Show story into an irresistible, attention-grabbing feature by using comedy.

Then, fast forward to 2019, I’d given up the producer’s chair for a trendy standing desk – and was now creating content for brands and businesses on social media.

And when one particular client’s tumbleweed socials was getting no engagement or reach – I started to wonder….

If comedy had the power to spice up almost anything on TV…

…EVEN the jam-making and stamp-collecting crossover episode that we shot at a sewage treatment centre…

But I was wrong – sort of…

But other jokes bombed.

Take our client, Guild Lab… 

They sell retirement homes – planned and developed by a team of leading academics. And as you can imagine, their in-house content was educational buuuut…let’s just say it lacked a certain spark…. 

Sadly for Guild Lab – no matter how hard they tried – they struggled to generate the engagement and excitement they knew would attract a flood of high-quality leads and sales. Which is when my agency stepped in to save their socials from death by disengagement. 

Can you guess what happened when we put comedy-fueled engagement magnets into Guild Lab’s content?

It’s fair to say their socials EXPLODED like the atmosphere in the care home on ‘new Scrabble set’ day!

Let’s have a gander at the two social posts below. 

They’re for the exact same business…and the exact same topic. 

Plus, they were posted on the exact same day.

But now for a twist that’d make M. Night Shyamalan jealous. Take a closer look at the post on the right. Notice anything?

The post with a joke generated 1,100 likes…241 shares…and 37 comments – compared to a measly 9 likes generated by Guild Lab’s old, in-house content. 

Just let that sink in for a minute…

The funny post (with its in-built engagement magnet) got over 100x the likes comments and shares of the standard post – think about the impact this kind of increase in engagement could have on your business.

Not surprisingly, Guild Lab was blown away by this unprecedented level of engagement (which we repeated across their account time and time again). 

And all it took was to STOP relying on worn-out social media strategies like sharing…

*After all, there’s no ‘I’ in ‘lamentable lack of engagement’!

Instead, we took a simple insight…

…we turned it into a comedy-powered engagement magnet…

And that turned the post into a hyper-engaging – but childishly-easy-to-produce – piece of content.

(*Although why they insisted on buying a door made of platinum, I’ll never know…)  

But they’re not the only ones getting BIG results with funny social posts about an otherwise snooze-worthy topic.…

I mean, “healthy drinks” doesn’t exactly scream laugh-a-minute to anyone. 

But Innocent have found that being funny on social media is key to staying relevant and top-of-mind. 

And that strategy doesn’t just get them loads of likes. It converts.

Because when we see their smoothies on the shelf, it reminds us of the laughs we had online – they’ve created a positive association that stays with us*.

*EVEN when we take a bottle to the checkout only to learn that it’s not part of the meal deal, even though it was clearly on the meal deal shelf, and we end up paying full price. But we’re totally over it.

Then there’s Old Spice. 

Comedy makes their marketing go viral – and it’s undoubtedly a huge part of how they’ve built such a loyal (and fragrant) customer base.
